Wellbeing and Pastoral care
Welcome to Battle Abbey School. Our small but remarkable school prides itself on the pastoral care provided to each and every member of our community. Our entire school approach aims to cultivate an atmosphere that promotes tolerance, resilience, fairness and equal opportunities for everyone.
At Battle Abbey Prep School, we introduce your child to the wonderful world of learning, in a happy, caring and supportive environment surrounded by thoughtful and approachable staff. We have a team of people who are responsible for the pastoral care of our children. Our Wellbeing Lead is trained in Mental Health First Aid and part of this role includes promoting children’s safety and well-being and implementing specific interventions for pupils.
Form Tutors monitor progress, development and wellbeing of every pupil under their care so that each pupil feels that they can discuss any issue they might have with someone who knows them as an individual. Every class has a ‘Worry Monster’ and children are free to note down any concerns. These are then read and addressed by the class teachers. We also have a school Counsellor who facilitates one to one sessions, as well as break-out sessions for smaller groups.
Our passionate and skilled Teaching Assistants take an active role in offering support to all children both inside and outside the classroom, enabling them to maintain positive behaviour and make the most of every learning opportunity.
Our pupils take an active role in the school and there are opportunities to take on responsibilities such as House Captain, Science Ambassador, Librarian and the opportunity to contribute to the ‘pupil voice’ by joining the School Council.
Teaching staff meet fortnightly to discuss children’s welfare and pastoral needs, reflecting on their wellbeing and considering any measures that may need to be put in place. We update staff daily, first thing in the morning, on any child that may need ‘special care’ or arrangements. We pride ourselves on working very closely with parents and families so that we can all contribute to the care and wellbeing of our pupils.
In addition to the emphasis we place on Pastoral Support and welfare and we are fortunate enough to have a dedicated Wellbeing Room. This is a safe and calm environment where students can go if they need to talk with someone, feel they are struggling academically or socially, or just need a quiet space to sit and reflect with Milo our own real life school dog.
Milo offers Battle Abbey Prep School a wealth of emotional and wellbeing benefits improving confidence levels, mental health as well providing the pupils with an uplifting experience when they feel low. He can often be seen welcoming everyone at the school door in the morning!
Development has also started on an area that will eventually be home to our completed Wellbeing Garden within the grounds, which the pupils, staff and parents will be able to use all year round for gentle reflection, peaceful thoughts and the opportunity to spend time within a natural and beautiful space.
