WELCOME

Welcome to our school

Welcome. Battle Abbey School is distinctively different. You will not come across a school quite like it. Uniquely small it has a real family feel and an ability to concentrate on the individual, so that he or she can be nurtured, monitored and tutored closely.

We believe in the children, in their right to think for themselves and express their opinions freely, in their latent talent, which can be developed in our unique surroundings. Our vision is for all pupils to develop their potential, in the belief that all have strengths and however different the strengths may be they are all equal in value. Pupils at Battle Abbey are justly proud of their school, and many quite simply love it.

School History

The site occupied by the Senior School dates back to the beginning of modern British history, for it was at Battle that William the Conqueror defeated King Harold in 1066. Shortly afterwards William’s church was consecrated.

The Abbot’s house was built in the thirteenth century whilst a monastery grew up around the church. A substantial part of the main school building originates from that time, the most modern addition from the sixteenth century. At the time of the Reformation many of the Abbey buildings were destroyed but the Abbot’s house passed into private hands

The school took over the property in 1922 and has been in continuous occupation since that date. Generations of pupils have experienced a sense of privilege at being educated in such majestic surroundings.

In 1989 the all-girls school merged with Glengorse and Hydneye, a local Prep. School and, becoming coeducational, accepted pupils from kindergarten to university age. In 1995 following a merger with Charters Ancaster the school transferred its Prep School to a new site in Bexhill, adding a purpose-built Junior School, playing fields, six tennis courts and a magnificent indoor swimming pool to its facilities.

SCHOOL LIFE

Academic - an opportunity to excel

We believe that everyone has the ability to excel. We try very hard to find the area for each individual that leads to excellence and not just, of course, in the classroom. Academic success is something we value highly but we are proud of the achievements of our pupils in all fields.

What are the results like? These will differ from year to year but the minimum expectation of a pupil at Battle Abbey School is to take nine GCSEs and our success rate is far above the national average.

Entry to the Sixth Form is based on the assumption that all pupils will. Achieve at least the minimum requirement to matriculate for a British university. Many of our pupils achieve much, much more. With small classes we have high expectations and a high success rate.

How are these achieved? Small classes and excellent staff/pupil ratios provide the opportunity for meeting each child’s individual needs. Regular pupil profiling and careful monitoring allow for prompt extension or remediation in any area. Specialist teachers are in place from Year 4 at the Prep. School.

Close co-operation with parents is valued and there are regular consultation meetings.

When can I begin? You can enter at any age, with the school’s approval. We like to see you and consider records from your last school. To enter the Senior School from another school, you have to pass our entrance exam.

Continuity of education from the age of three to the end of the Sixth Form is one of our key attractions.

Drama and Music - an opportunity to perform

Performing before an audience and the preparation that lies behind it are life skills we consider to be very important. Effective communication lies at the heart of successful relationships in all aspects of our lives. The average Battle Abbey pupil quickly develops confidence, self-assurance and the ability to stand up and be counted.

When can I perform? Both Music and Drama exist as curriculum subjects and there are productions and concerts on a regular basis. Most pupils will have the chance to be in a play and all will be given the opportunity to learn a musical instrument.

Theatre Studies is a highly popular subject both at GCSE and at “A” Level. Speech and Drama lessons are optional activities as are lessons in ballet, modern and tap dancing. Houses stage assemblies each week and the school regularly trains teams for public speaking competitions.
The Abbot’s Hall and the Library offer our performers very special venues which are frequently sought by outside groups. These rooms are always available to our pupils who are also freely invited to

attend any entertainment staged by guest artistes. Regular theatre visits are a feature of school life.

Dance may be studied as a GCSE subject as well as being available as an option activity. Many of the shows which are staged involve choreographed dance items and the school takes part in local competitions as well.

Visual arts - an opportunity to create

A major strength of the school is known to be found in the art department. Top class results are regularly achieved and the excellent teaching is supplemented by regular trips to art galleries. We exhibit our work proudly. Both two dimensional and three dimensional art can be studied,as well as textiles, leading to two GCSEs and those interested in Art History may go on to study this at “A” Level, as well as ‘A’ Level Art. It begins at the Prep. School where children are introduced to a wide range of art media.

What if I don’t paint? Creativity is not confined to the Art Room. Pupils compose and play music and learn to co-operate in dance and drama. They are encouraged to think creatively, to broaden their vision and extend their minds in all areas; writing a poem in a quiet moment, working as a group to create sets, make-up and costumes for a drama production: solving a mathematical or scientific problem: composing a speech for a public speaking competition: planning an essay: creating friendships: creating opportunities.

Sport - an opportunity to compete

Competition lies at the heart of much human endeavour and progress. You can compete against others or against yourself. We will encourage you to compete hard and achieve your best, not only compete in the classroom but in all areas of school life.

Will I be in a team? In a small school like BAS everyone has a chance to represent the school at sport. We offer expert coaching in all sports. Pupils with special talents may join outside clubs or seek membership of county squads. Matches are played mid week and on Saturdays. In addition, opportunities exist to play squash, volleyball and to trampoline, to weight train, and sail.

Basketball is a popular option and we are lucky to have a first-class indoor swimming pool. We use it extensively both for coaching and for recreational swimming. Pupils in the Senior School are coached by qualified specialists in their chosen sport each term, so that all pupils, not just the talented, receive the benefit of top quality instruction. Teams are trained after school in preparation for their matches.

Science - an opportunity to investigate

We believe that everyone should have the chance to find out for themselves about the world and its place in the universe. We want them to experience some of the wonder and delight of scientific discovery.

How do students learn about science? Many ideas in science may be investigated by doing experiments in the laboratory. We have three modern labs, housed in the converted stable block and all equipped with the latest apparatus. Pupils are encourage to carry out their own practical work, extending their observational and investigative skills as they do so.

How is science organised here? We have labs for physics, chemistry and biology, all equipped to A-level standard. In years 7, 8 and 9 pupils take science as an integrated subject. After that they may specialise and study the three separate science subjects.

How about science in the sixth form? Students who have the interest and aptitude for A-level science will find their needs extremely well met by highly qualified and experienced teachers.

ICT - an opportunity to discover

We believe that everyone should have the facilties to gain experience and skill with information technology and its applications.

How do students study ICT? Pupils use the whole-school network both in timetabled ICT lessons and as a facilitator in studying other subjects.

Our ICT suite has three servers and broadband internet access. There are workstations in all teaching rooms throughout the school.

Students are encouraged to use their own laptops in school. We have provided network access points to connect portable computers so that students may browse the Internet and access their own networked resources at any time. The school network is also always available at evenings and weekends. Boarders may use school workstations or laptops whenever they wish.

How about the Prep School? There is a school network with broadband internet access, specialist computer room and workstations for pupils to use in the library. ICT is integrated into schemes of work and assessment

Extra curricular activities - an opportunity to grow

Academic results are not the only measure of a good education. We believe in a rounded education and offer many opportunities outside of the classroom for growth, fun and development. Every evening after school there are activities which include sport practice, the Choir, the Concert Band, BasJazz, singing and instrumental lessons, the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme, ATC, horse riding, dance, gymnastics, play rehearsals, swimming, speech and drama. These activities are available for day pupils and boarders alike but extra activities are laid on for the boarders - cookery club, shopping excursions, cinema trips, bowling, walks and much else.

There are many trips out of school. Each year there is a ski trip and a trip to Germany and France. There are excursions in this country too. These may include field trips or visits to theatres in London or sports tours, and each year has a fun day once a year, when they choose a good destination.

SIXTH FORM

Sixth form life

All pupils benefit from the holistic approach to education on offer here. Our children develop as part of the school family and as individuals. They become confident young adults with a high level of social skills, aware of the importance of good conduct. They learn the rewards that are the result of hard work both in and out of the classroom. They learn to serve and think of others.

What’s it like in the sixth form? The Sixth Form pupils have a range of different privileges suited to their age. They do not wear a uniform but are expected to dress smartly. They have their own Common Room and Study Room. They are encouraged to take on more responsibility for their own learning so that they can develop the habits of study they will need later at university. Positions of authority within the school allow them to acquire qualities of leadership.

Our most senior prefects are called School Guardians. In a normal year there would be only one or two. There are four Heads of Houses and school prefects called ‘Bronzes’. House prefects are called ‘Stars’. It is rare that a sixth former does not assume some form of responsibility within the school.

Sixth form courses

There are are eighteen different A and AS courses to choose from. We expect that potential Sixth Formers have a minimum of six passes at grade C or above and will have achieved a B grade at GCSE in their chosen subjects.

Courses available are: English, Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, French, German, History, Geography, I.T., Art, Textiles, Art History, Ph Ed, Music, Business Studies.

Peer support

What should I do if I have a problem? At Battle Abbey,Star, Bronze (School prefect) or boarding prefect will be able to help you with your problems. We know that many students prefer to go to another young person for help, and so a Peer Support system has been established. Peer Supporters are Sixth Formers who have expressed a particular interest in looking after younger students in the school. Many of them are Stars and Bronzes and all have participated in a training programme designed to help them become attentive listeners and skilled communicators. A member of staff supervises the work they do with younger students, but nonetheless it is confidential. You can therefore go to Supporters with the knowledge that they are trusted students who have your welfare and happiness very clear in mind.

Careers

Almost all of our Upper Sixth Formers go off to University or Art College. Careful career and university guidance steers them in the right direction. Suitable selection of the most appropriate courses is achieved following detailed analytical testing and consultation. The school’s Careers Counsellor works closely with each individual.

UCAS

Choosing the right university and the right course is vital. The school provides skilled help to steer students toward the right decisions. This starts with a visit to a university ‘fair’, followed by meetings and teaching sessions. Guidance is given every step of the way. There is a school career’s counsellor as well as the services of the Sussex Careers Service to support the work and advice of the home team.

BOARDING

An opportunity to belong. Day pupils and boarders' enjoy close relationships in this family school. Day pupils often board for a few nights and share a room with their friends. Boarding is fun. Your friends are there and there is plenty of time in the evenings for relaxation and activities after Prep.

During the weekends you will be free to enjoy trampolining in the Abbot’s Hall, toasting marshmallows round the fire, an impromptu game of football on the floodlit Astro. There is volleyball in the Summer, reading in the library, pianos round every corner, a quiet part of this beautiful building to chat with your friends,

curling up in front of the TV to watch a favourite video, rollerblading, a whole host of weekend excursions, tea and toast before bed (a Battle Abbey institution) and much else...

Older children board in the Abbot’s House; boys and girls have spacious, well-furnished bedrooms, in different wings, which they share with two or three others, while some Sixth Formers have single rooms. Various communal rooms allow the boarders to come together. The Head of Boarding is assisted by his wife and the Headmaster.

A team of matrons look after the boarders welfare and health and the school doctors visit several times a week. Deep and lasting friendships are formed and developed in this intimate family environment.

Will I have to do what I’m told? Yes! There always needs to be order in any community but the relationships that exist between pupils and the adults are excellent. The discipline of the school is based on mutual respect and thinking about others first.

Overseas students

Battle Abbey School has a long tradition of welcoming students from all over the world. Extra lessons in English are available and students are prepared for IGCSE English and/or the IOLTS examination conducted by the University of Cambridge. In recent years we have had students from France, Germany, Spain, Denmark, the United States of America, Russia, Moldova, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan and Australia.

Junior boarding

What will boarding be like? The Junior Boarding House for our youngest boarders stands right next to the Headmaster’s House. Here children share bedrooms with one or two others and boys and girls enjoy the family sitting rooms, a garden and a small adventure area. The house parents and a female student live in the house with the children and create with them a second home. The Head of the Prep School, the Headmaster’s wife, joins in the life of the large family next door.

PREP SCHOOL

Prep school life - learning to enjoy learning

Education should not be a drudge. It should be an exciting experience. Our ethos is based firmly on the over-riding aim to provide a stimulating environment in which children can develop a love of learning, and see it as a pleasure rather than a chore to be endured. We are constantly investigating different ways of providing this.

The structure of the school, and our small classes, allow us to provide the care and attention that each child needs to develop individual areas of talent, and to enjoy the confidence that success breeds. To that end we offer a broad-based curriculum and a variety of after-school activities.

We seek to provide a happy environment. The able child will not be happy unless challenged, and the less able child will not be happy unless well supported and encouraged. It is a natural blend of a caring, family atmosphere and a sense of purpose.

We are the junior department of Battle Abbey School and the vast majority of our pupils gain automatic entry to the senior school, which shares our fundamental philosophy of education, and justifiably boasts excellent examination results. We are proud of our school and consider that every day should be an Open Day – an opportunity for prospective parents and pupils to visit us, and see for themselves how a normal day runs. We extend a warm welcome to you.

Nursery - where do I start?

The Nursery Department comprises a Kindergarten and Reception class. These are spacious and well-equiped areas run by full-time, experienced and well-trained staff. The Reception class is run by a fully trained teacher.

When can I start?  You can enter the Preparatory school in the Nursery Department when you are two and a half and ‘dry’. The sessions in the kindergarten are very flexible, designed to ease children into the routines of school life. By Reception, at the age of 4, children confidently stay each day until 3.30pm. Emphasis is placed on the early acquisition of essential literacy and numeracy skills and children enjoy a wide range of other activities, investigative, creative, and physical.

Facilities

The Prep School site is in Bexhill on Sea, a short drive from Battle, where it is housed in a large Edwardian building with bright, spacious classrooms, an attractive dining hall and a purpose built hall / gymnasium. It has an impressive IT suite with the latest technology and computers in every classroom.

To the rear of the building there is a large playground area with a range of adventure playground apparatus. To the side of the building there is a large sports field, six tennis courts, netball courts and hard hockey surface. Beyond that is a splendid 25 metre indoor heated swimming pool. So you can see that, although we are a small school, our facilities are impressive!

Boarding

We have a Junior boarding house, Westnedge, which stands across the Abbey grounds, next to the Headteacher’s family home. It offers well-staffed care and home comforts. You can be a full boarder, a weekly boarder or enjoy occasional boarding.

Sport - developing individual talent

Physical exercise is an important part of our curriculum.

At Key Stage 1 children have two double lessons of swimming each week and quickly become confident swimmers. They also have two double lessons of games and one of music and movement.

At Key Stage 2 children have a double lesson of sport every day. Two days a week this session is swimming. On the other three days children are introduced to, and coached in, a variety of sports including netball, hockey, football, tennis, cricket, rounders, athletics and gymnastics.

Additional sports are introduced as after-school actiivities.

Academic - what will I learn?

Academically, you will follow a curriculum which prepares you for KS2 tests and is broad enough to challenge you in areas of drama, art, sport and music.A child who is well-taught and learns to enjoy learning will fulfil its potential both inside and out of the classroom, will learn to think for itself and develop as an individual whilst understanding its place in the world.

What will broaden my horizons? From Year 3 that curriculum will introduce you to French, I.T, Drama, Art, Music, Swimming and Sports and you will learn the valuable skill of touch typing. There is also a range of after school activities including dance, choir, art and craft, chess, instrumental music, IT and a range of extra sports coaching.

On May 5 the Year7 and Year 8 French Trip went once more to Maison Claremont in St Omer. The fastest route is through the tunnel.  Pupils visits had a historical theme. They visited first the battlefield at Azincourt, the site of a great English victory.  From here they went on to Bagatelle, a theme park near Le Touquet. This may well be a firm favourite on every French trip from now on! The market at St Omer is also a firm favourite - pupils bought various treats, including cherries and giant gobstoppers.  Pupils showed a lot of interest in the cathedral, and many lit candles'

There will be an expedition to Kenya, East Africa next summer. Pupils will be involved in a building project at a local school in Kirimun. The local community are traditionally Masai and consider education to be their most important asset. They are a very poor community but very rich in tradition. It is a joint project between two school communities where both sides will fundraise and build. Pupils will camp during the expedition, barter for food at local markets and cook for themselves. There will be opportunity for adventure such as a camel safari, a canoe trip and walking in the foothills of Mt Kenya.

Alumni - Keep in touch

BAFPA – Battle Abbey Former Pupils Association keeps former pupils in touch with each other and the school. A Founders Day service is held every year on the first Saturday in October in St. Mary’s Church, Battle, followed by tea in the Abbey. Archive photographs are on display in the library on this occasion In 2003 the guest speaker was Monica Steward, who retired as Deputy Head after 31years service. Many former pupils and staff returned to Battle Abbey and had a great time catching up on their news and reliving old memories! In the picture below Monica is photographed with Miss Parker, Mr. Teall and Mr. Clark, the three Head teachers she served with during her long career at the school.

Last year the tribute to the school was made by Sarah and Hannah Mercer, who both attributed their success as career women to the grounding received at the Abbey. Sarah was at the school during the 1980s and is a very successful freelance translator, having specialised in legal work in German. Hannah, who joined in the late 80s and left in 1995, studied accountancy at University but is now a professional actress.

A Newsletter is published annually in July with news of former pupils, which is available at a minimal cost of £2 per year. The 2004 school magazine is in stock. This costs £5, but is free to paid up subscription members. Please call the school office if you would like a copy.

For further information regarding BAFPA, please contact BAFPA Secretary at the school or click here to e-mail BAFPA.

There is a reunion website containing news from many former pupils as well as the Friends Reunited site which can be found at:

http://groups.msn.com/battleabbeyreunionsite

STOP PRESS.............A group of 1969 leavers led by Alex Buckwell (née Walenta) Shirley Crowther and Eve Bennett (née Goding) are planning to have a reunion on Founders' Day which this year takes place on Saturday October 1st. Anyone interested in joining this reunion can contact Shirley via email: gallery@jointurestudios.co.uk or telephone 01424 772385 and leave your name and telephone number for Mrs. Steward who will put you in touch with Shirley.

Developments - what's new?

The School has had a successful history since 1922 and there is a great dynamism about today’s school as we move into the 21st century. Pupil numbers in both locations have increased by an impressive 40% and with 275 pupils we are close to our maximum. We have made substantial progress following the outright purchase of the Prep School at Bexhill three years ago. The Governors have invested a total of £1,700,000 in equipment and buildings at both the Prep School and at the Abbey. Computers, new furniture in every boarding bedroom and a brand new roof at Bexhill are examples. Most significant of all developments is the splendid new Art Block at the Abbey, which is the first phase in a planned programme of new buildings. The Governors are keen to keep the momentum going and have outline planning permission for a four-room Performing Arts Centre, which will include a small theatre. Developments at the Prep School will involve a new Art Studio above the Dining room and improving the outside play area. In order to achieve these aims within the next two years, we need to raise the finance from our many friends and those who have an interest in the future of the school. Major capital projects of this kind cannot be funded out of fee income by such a small school and so, for the first time, we are seeking support for an appeal which will help us to move rapidly forward.

If you are able to help or would like to make a donation, please contact the Appeal Office at Battle Abbey School.

5. Hair must be kept tidy and all extremes of length and/or style must be avoided.
6. A limited amount of jewellery may be worn.

Weddings
Battle Abbey School occupies one of the most remarkable buildings in Britain. William the Conqueror built the original church on the site after he defeated King Harold at the Battle of Hastings in 1066. The Abbey church is now in ruins, but the Abbot's House remains, which currently houses the school.
The entrance through the Gatehouse into Battle Abbey School is pictured on the right.
Weddings may be held in the magnificent thirteenth century Abbot's Hall pictured here, or in the Victorian Duke's Library pictured below..
The cost of a wedding and ceremony at Battle Abbey School is £3,300, to include the exclusive use of the Abbot's Hall, Duke's Library, Refectory and school grounds.
After the Ceremony, we can offer you our excellent hospitality with a range of buffet and sit-down menus, catering for up to 120 people. Our menus start at £25.00 per person.
