Science
Wherever possible Science is presented to the pupils in a practical context. We believe in children having the opportunity to do the real thing first and then using the many available computer simulations, videos and DVDs to support and reinforce what they have found out. Right from the start of KS2, pupils become involved in investigational work, gradually opening up the process of a fair test and scientific enquiry and developing the necessary skills for an area that has become such an important part of the science curriculum.

Much of our learning takes place in the classroom but not all. The curriculum is supported by visits to places such as RSPCA Mallydams Wood and Port Lympne Wild Animal Park; by visiting speakers such as the Dental Service, the Electricity Board, the School Nurse and the Police; and by visits to the school by such as Zoolab, Skylab and the Quantum Theatre for Science.

The Science SATS results are consistently above the national average and in 2008 75% of our children achieved a level 5 and we have not had a level 3 in the last 11 years.  One of our proudest moments last year, however, was that the top 2 pupils in the Science Scholarship exam for the Senior School were from the Prep School.

In Key Stage 2 at Battle Abbey Prep School pupils have 5 lessons of Science a week. Pupils use IT in some areas of the curriculum - for research, to support and consolidate their work, for the collection of data and for recording. We follow the National Curriculum and use the QCA Scheme of Work.
