GCSE PE
At Battle Abbey School we follow the GCSE PE with Edexcel. Edexcel have introduced a new course and we have changed our syllabus to that below. Pupils have four lessons a week of GCSE PE, we spilt this into two practical and two theoretical.
Practical Sports
Pupils participate in five selected sports during the course, as well as the additional practical sports they cover within their games lessons and finally there is also the opportunity to offer other sporting activities that the pupils cover externally in their own recreational and leisure time. We then select their best four sports performances for entry into the exam and they will be assessed by a PE teacher. Sports/activities that the pupils participate in their own time will need to be assessed by an external qualified instructor. The teacher in charge of the practical activities will arrange to meet with the instructor to explain the assessment criteria. It is then the responsibility of the pupils and instructor to ensure the assessment is carried out, recorded and delivered to the Head of PE.
For practical assessments teachers will use the Edexcel GCSE PE assessment grid, this information will be given to the pupils at the beginning of every practical sport so they have a clear understanding and outlook on what they need to do to achieve a specific score. Assessment lists for other sporting activities and external assessments will be given to the pupils if required. Assessments will occur at the end of each block of sport. These grades will be given to the pupils plus feedback on how and what to improve in order to further develop their practical performances. As stated above the assessment grades will be readily available to the pupils on student docs.
Theoretical PE
Pupils will be given a GCSE PE file and will collate various work packs, homework activities and other information regarding the theory work throughout the two year course. Pupils will work through the Edexcel PE syllabus and cover in great depth all of the areas highlighted and specified by the examining body.
Pupils will be regularly assessed with end of unit tests, half term exams, and mock examination papers.
Pupils will have access to their theory and practical grades through the student documents area on the school system.
