Maths
We use the National Curriculum for Mathematics as a guide and draw much from the Schemes of Work and Key Objectives set out in the National Numeracy Strategy. The children spend on average one hour each day engaged in mathematical activities.
Our aims in teaching Mathematics are that all children will:

Enjoy Mathematics and tackle all activities with confidence and a sense of achievement.

Develop mathematical skills and the ability to apply these to everyday situations, including problems and investigations in a variety of contexts.

Achieve a high standard of numeracy.
We use a variety of approaches in the teaching of Mathematics. Cooperative and collaborative group or paired work, individual work and whole class teaching are used as appropriate. Reception to Year 2 use Ginn New Abacus as the core text book. This scheme provides a comprehensive framework that is supported by a wide variety of other resources and activities. Years 3 to 6 follow the National Numeracy strategy supported by a wide variety of other resources. Practical activities, games, investigations and a state of the art I.C.T. suite with a variety of software packages are used to allow the pupils to apply their understanding of mathematical concepts in an enjoyable and meaningful context.
Mental mathematics plays a vital role within the curriculum and years 4 to 6 have weekly mental tests. Pupils are encouraged to learn their multiplication table facts by heart from an early age, to enhance the speed and accuracy of their calculations as they progress through the school and these are supported by weekly tests.
Many of our pupils in Years 5 and 6 compete in the Primary Mathematics Challenge which is organised by the Mathematical Association.
The following pages include an outline of some of the areas your child will be studying during a particular year. The children are encouraged to progress at a rate suited to their ability. It is therefore important to remember that some pupils will be extended beyond the targets listed for their year group whilst others may need extra support and reinforcement.
Homework in Years 3 to 6 is used to reinforce and extend pupils’ understanding of the mathematical concepts covered in school.
By offering an enjoyable and stimulating curriculum we aim to nurture a positive attitude toward this core subject and equip pupils with both the confidence and competence to tackle mathematical activities, both within the school setting and in their everyday lives.
