 Here at Battle Abbey we offer the GCSE full course and we follow the Edexcel examining board.
 
The course is split into three units which are Unit 1 - The theory of PE, Unit 2 - Practical activities and Unit 3 – Analysis of performance.

Course overview information
 
Unit 1 – The theory of PE

This constitutes 40% of the overall GCSE and is marked out of 80 marks in the final examination theory paper, which you have 1 hour and 30 minutes to complete with the paper containing

· 10 multi choice questions

· short answer questions

· 3 scenario questions

The theory work itself is split into two sections and they are:
 
Section 1.1: Healthy, active lifestyles:

• Topic 1: Healthy, active lifestyles and how they could benefit you

• Topic 2: Influences on your healthy, active lifestyle

• Topic 3: Exercise and fitness as part of your healthy, active lifestyle

• Topic 4: Physical activity as part of your healthy, active lifestyle

• Topic 5: Your personal health and wellbeing
 
Section 1.2: Your healthy, active body:
 
• Topic 1.2.1: Physical activity and your healthy mind and body

• Topic 1.2.2: A healthy, active lifestyle and your cardiovascular system

• Topic 1.2.3: A healthy, active lifestyle and your respiratory system

• Topic 1.2.4: A healthy, active lifestyle and your muscular system

• Topic 1.2.5: A healthy, active lifestyle and your skeletal system
 
Unit 2 – Practical Activities
 
 This is the practical element of the course and constitutes 48% of the overall GCSE.
 
This is taken from the four options the pupil chooses to offer as their practical performances with each performance being marked out of ten in either the role of player / participant, leader /coach or finally referee / umpire.
 
· 4 to be offered
 
· At least 2 must be as Player /Participant
 
· Activities must be chosen from 2 different areas as stipulated in the syllabus
 
· May select Leader and /or Official as an activity
 
Unit 3 – Analysis of performance
 
 This involves the pupils choosing one of their practical options and analysing the performance of either themselves or another person. They will analyse this person based on five areas and are expected to draw on knowledge from their theory work to demonstrate an extensive knowledge and understanding of the course.
 
This area is marked out of twenty and constitutes the final 12% of the course.
 
The five areas are:
 
· Rules, regulations and terminology = 4 marks
 
· Observe and analyse performance = 4 marks
 
· Evaluate performance = 4 marks
 
· Plan strategies, tactics and practices = 4 marks
 
· Plan a Personal Exercise Programme = 4 marks
  
At Battle Abbey school we have a high success rate in GCSE PE with 100% of our pupils achieving an A*- C grade in the past six years. This is something we are obviously very proud of and with the wealth of experience and resources the department has we hope this will continue for many years to come.
