English
English lies at the heart of the curriculum and in their lessons, students develop skills which will equip them for other subjects. Aspects of Drama such as role-play, hot-seating, reading from and writing scripts and the study of Shakespeare are incorporated into the delivery of English. Students use historical details to contextualise literature. Individuals are encouraged to research and develop an understanding of other cultures as well as their own by reading a range of texts drawn from a global body of Literature. Students explore how to write for particular audiences and purposes. On a fundamental level, students are taught to write with technical accuracy and a cogent and cohesive style.
Students are encouraged to take ownership of their work and to become independent learners. All must be able to access the curriculum and this informs the way we deliver the subject; group work, a balance of oral and written tasks and practical tasks allow students with different learning styles to enjoy success. Students learn best when they engage with the work. The role of the teacher is to instill an enjoyment of the subject and to create a positive and supportive learning environment.
As a department, consistency of delivery and content is vital to ensure students share a similar experience of the subject. There are currently five fully qualified teachers delivering the subject, two of which have qualifications in teaching students with dyslexia. One teacher assumes responsibility for both Year 6 and Year 7 to ensure a smooth transition for students coming up from the prep school.
Students study a varied curriculum at Key Stage 3 before embarking on their GCSEs in English Language and Literature. At Key Stage 5, we offer A Level Literature, a course which encourages students to place their reading in a wider literary and historical context.
