Economics
"There is no harm in being sometimes wrong — especially if one is promptly found out."
- Essays in Biography (1933) John Maynard Keynes
No one is unaffected by Economics. Whether we understand its forces or not, we have to cope with its effects. What is it? Essentially, Economics is the study of the allocation of and consumption of scarce resources, such as land, labour and capital. It provides the answers to questions to:
• Can pollution be effectively controlled?
• Why does the average premier league player earn in a fortnight what a nurse earns in a year?
• What effect does a fall in house prices have on the UK?
At Battle Abbey School, you have the opportunity to study ‘AS’ and ‘A2’ Level Economics (AQA Examination Board). It is the belief of the Economics Department that students should excel academically and develop an understanding of the subject beyond the curriculum. There is an annual study tour which in the past has involved attending a board meeting in New York, visiting a bauble factory in Poland, having a talk from a senior economist in Hong Kong and many other visits. Additionally the upper sixth class competes in a competition run by the Bank of England.
