Art Textiles
The school has a highly successful and thriving Art Department, specialising in three areas: Fine Art, Art Textiles (which are studied together in years 7, 8 and 9 but independently at GCSE and A level), and History of Art which is offered as a further option at A level.

Visits to galleries, collections and exhibitions in this country and abroad, as well as day schools taught by internationally celebrated textile and fine artists broaden the pupils’ artistic experience. Artists who have visited Battle Abbey School in recent years include artists such as Lucy Brown, Heather Collins and Crawfurd Adamson. The wealth of experience and inspiration they bring to the course augments the curriculum enormously.

The department is also involved in cultural activities outside the school and in recent years has exhibited at the Royal Albert Hall in two Remembrance exhibitions, and a fashion show organised in conjunction with performances of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly.

The success of the department can be gauged by the quality of work on display around the school and in its art rooms, and also its examination results, which are well above the national average.

As mentioned previously Sixth form pupils also have the option of studying History of Art. Not only does this complement other wholly written Humanities subjects such as History, English, Media Studies, Geography, and so on, but also provides an invaluable addition to artistic knowledge and understanding. Perfect for pupils studying Fine Art and Art Textiles, especially those planning careers in art and design.
